Pinzgauer, survival truck from Austria

This thing is an awesome 4x4. I know a guy who has imported several and has them for sale, street legal. Great little truck, used as a "jeep" by the Austrian military. He takes em offroad in Colorado. If youre interested say so and I will post more info.

OK, let me help you out here. I KNOW lots of Pinzie owners. The saying goes "the two happiest moments in my life are when I bought the Pinzie and when I finally SOLD the pinzie". VERY EXPENSIVE proposition. Most parts needed must be shipped from overseas.

The engine is air cooled and prone to heat problems. Plus NOISY as doo-dah. And is GAS operated. And five speed manual, though they can do highway speeds with no problems, if you don't mind riding in the cab with the motor screaming between you and your front passenger.

And the costs of parts will make you shudder. Look at it this way. If the vehicle sells for $10k+ - $15k+ the parts follow suit. Steyr-Puch has a tendency to purchase spare parts caches as business go out of business. You can get lucky and purchase a parts truck and hope that everything you are looking for are on it.

Now, MY 2.5 ton US MV 6x6 cost me $3500, parts are readily available AND fairly cheap. There is an article in this months 'Diesel Power' magazine. If you want to visit a place where you can learn more, go to www.steelsoldiers.com and come in and set a spell.

MY MV WILL go as many places as the Pinzie, WITH minor exceptions, mainly the narrow spots of tight Euro/African back goat trails.

But it will carry more than ANY Pinzie ever will. Unless you buy a new one. Of course, a NEW ONE costs $125K+ !

If you want a REAL TRUCK, this BIG GREEN IRON is IT! I own one and they are 'da bomb'. Besides, how many other vehicles can you drive around without a license plate and just have the cops wave at you, old guys look and some even salute. Which I return crisply.

And when push comes to shove, police let this vehicle 'cut' in line or redirect them away from the lines of people escaping what ever tragedy is occuring. Like Katrina.

Here's the US MV Linky I posted earlier.

Here's a picture of MY DEUCE ! At least what it USED to look like. A lot has changed in the past four months. New Super Single tires (42 inches tall instead of 37 inches) which gives me a 68 mph top speed (for now).

The engine on my truck and on most deuces is a multifuel. SOME of them are gassers, so this DOES NOT apply to all deuces. But it will burn everything from kerosine to JP8 (jet fuel). Hardtop, in cab heater, air shift front axle, multifuel turbo 'D' engine. In basically excellent shape.

We've been camping up above 9500 ft with temps at night around 10 degrees. Started right up the next morning. Ran well the whole trip. Even holds a spare queen sized bed in the back with LOADS of room left. And mine is just the soft top over the rear.

You got good points, but are the front wheels powered?

I know... I should know this as a vet.

Only when I flip the air shift front axle to on. Otherwise it's just the rear FOUR tires. I went with Super Singles, which meant flipping the hubs and only using one larger tire per side makes it work much better. EVERY test the US military did, the idea of one tire per side of axle carried more weight, handled better, got better mpg, all sorts of positives. Of course, if you have a flat, unlike running duals on the rear, YOU GOTTA change it. You can't just keep going.

Well, I guess in bad situation you could and then change it when you got to a 'safe' area. I guess it actually depends on how much of a load you were carrying or towing. But overall, having six tires on the ground and two spares makes it all worth while.

And for those of you who just GOTTA have an RV, here's the Deuce RV linky !

That RV was on either HGTV or one of the other cable shows. They did a whole show on 'odd' RV's built by individuals. His was actually one of the better designed/constructed RV's.

Sorry to see he's selling it now. It is a NICE RV. Especially if you or your spouse is in a wheel chair, which is what the elevator is for. Worked well from what I saw.

Really sorry to hear his wife has taken a turn for the worse.

OK, so the Pinzgauer has problems. There are also a number of Unimogs out there. How do the Unimogs measure up?

The MOGS are great trucks. I wished I had bought one when they were $4k about ten - fifteen years ago. You can purchase a lot of the parts via Napa. BUT remember this IS a Mercedes Benz truck and even the parts at Napa can get pricey.

It's a great truck. Especially if you can find one with a diesel. Hey, I like diesel. The gassers are also nice trucks. But they have gotten way too expensive for me.

Plus the ONLY vehicle I tried that had running boards was the deuce. And I would NEVER attempt to stand on the top of a MOG cab. Or fenders. Or anywhere in the engine bay. I CAN on my deuce.

I've got a picture where me and another guy were BOTH standing on the front left fender looking at something in the engine bay. STOUT TRUCK for sure.

If you guys can go get the May 2006 Diesel Power magazine, you will see what they thought of the deuce. "You gotta have one of these".

Prices are going UP as the supply slowly shrinks, ladies and gentlemen. So if you were thinking about going this route, NOW is the time. Actually LAST year was the time, but even I missed it until the first of the year. But, SHHH, you didn't hear it from ME.
